Cause and treatment of Yeast Infection in Men

Yeast infection is something that we think of primarily in women and babies but yeast infection in men is more common than what you might think. A yeast infection is caused by an overgrowth of Candida in the digestive track and can happen to anyone regardless of age or sex. There are several different types of diseases that are connected to Candida overgrowth including thrush, skin rashes, athletes foot and the genital yeast infection that affect women and men.

A yeast infection in men may be caused by a number of different factors; one of the more common factors is sexual transmission from a partner that already has a yeast infection. Yeast infections can also be caused by antibiotics much in the same way that they do for women but this is not a usual cause of yeast infections for men. Antibiotics by their nature kill all bacteria, since they cannot distinguish between the bad bacteria they are used to kill and the good bacteria that prevents Candida overgrowth, they can start the yeast infection process by killing of this bacteria and allowing Candida to take over.

Men with Diabetes are at high risk of having a yeast infection due to the elevated sugar levels in their urine, Candida feeds off of sugar making this an ideal environment for it to thrive.

You will know you may have a yeast infection by the presence of red itchy bumps on the penis, as well as small blisters at the head of the penis, and a thick white discharge. You may experience irritation and soreness in addition to the itching.

While these are the symptoms of a yeast infection they may also be signs of genital herpes, so it is very important that you visit your doctor to get a thorough examination and get tested both for a yeast infection and genital herpes. If you do not get a diagnosis, you can pass your infection on to your partner and if you both do not treat at the same time you may continue to pass it back and forth.

Once you have a diagnosis, treating men yeast infection is much the same as treating it in women. There are over the counter remedies available that can treat yeast infection both in men and women, but should be never be used unless you have had at least one previous diagnosis of a yeast infection.
